Picture my horror while browsing through the web and this photo splashed across my screen with the caption “Four Nigerian Homosexuals In Imo State Stripped Naked And Paraded In The Streets”
As a gay man, my heart bleeds. I cannot speak as a black gay man, but I’m pretty sure any logical thinking black gay person will be consumed with anger and disappointment for the people that did this to these men. According to reports, the four gay Nigerian men were “suspected of practising homosexuality” and were arrested by their community men in Ekwe, a village very close to Umuka in Njaba LGA of Imo State. The men were allegedly molested by their community men and were later stripped naked and tied in rope as they were whisked to the elder of the village.
Why isn’t every human rights group condemning this? Why isn’t this on the front page of every news paper the sane thinking world? Same-sex relations are illegal in Nigeria and new legislation prohibits homosexual acts between men with jail terms of up to 14 years.
Sad…
